RSHE Full Curriculum
What do we learn in our time at school?
The Relationship, Sex, and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum is a vital component of LJFS, designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the complexities of contemporary life. The intent of the RSHE curriculum is to foster qualities and attributes that enable children to manage life’s opportunities, challenges, and responsibilities effectively. It aims to provide students with the tools needed to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health, and relationships, ultimately preparing them to become healthy, safe, independent, and responsible members of society.
Implementation of the RSHE curriculum involves a structured approach that aligns with school values and statutory guidelines. It is typically delivered through a combination of discrete lessons and integrated activities across various subjects. Teachers, often supported by trained RSHE leads, are responsible for delivering the curriculum. However, successful implementation can be hindered by factors such as insufficient teacher training, lack of resources, and inconsistent curriculum coverage. Schools that excel in RSHE implementation often allocate specific curriculum time and employ systems to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching.
The impact of the RSHE curriculum is multifaceted. Ideally, it results in students who are well-informed about consent, healthy relationships, and personal wellbeing. It also aims to reduce incidents of sexual harassment and violence by promoting respect and understanding. However, the impact can vary significantly depending on the quality of implementation. Schools with robust RSHE programs report positive outcomes, such as increased student confidence and improved social interactions. Conversely, schools with weak implementation often see less engagement and understanding among students.
RSHE is lifelong learning about physical, moral and emotional development. Through RSHE children learn about relationships, diversity, respect, healthy lifestyles, safety, the body and how it changes, reproduction and birth in a sensitive and age-appropriate way. Our key aim in providing RSHE throughout the school is to safeguard our students
